These 4 foot x 4 foot squares pictured in the back seat of this 1995 Pontiac Bonneville will be configured on Parliament Hill temporarily for the Live Chess game on May 12, 2024 from 2 pm until 5 pm. Mother’s Day will be a day of fun, comradery and support in a spirited game.
The white lattice squares will represent the white spaces on the chess board while players move amongst the green grass as black squares. Due do possible wind and weather considerations the Lattice was the best option as it will leave very little footprint in terms of damage to the grass and has enough weight to avoid issues with wind impacting the game play. The Parliament Hill in Ottawa will be transformed in this historic event.
These white squares will be available for future games in a town or country or for annual use as this event has the potential to be a very fun tradition. With innocent beginnings as a late night conversation between Poetry enthusiast’s at the Somerset Poets Circle, to a permit application, Chess on Parliament is sure to memorable and monumental in impact and overall fun. Participants and contributors in the first iteration of this event are on the precipice of something great, literal warriors for peace, joy, health and happiness – true freedom in a world in need of more inspiration. Together we vanquish the pain and suffering albeit for only a moment in a diversion supporting the raising awareness of the important work of the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada.
The event is done on a shoe-string with minimal frills with a focus on the impact. Participants, sponsors and contributors will make this what it will be and with connections, memories and reverberations we will see the next event even more impactful in years to come.
